Ilu Bata

Workshop level

Level 3

Dates

April 2027 - TBC
From Thurs 6 pm to Sun 4 pm

Type

Residential

Hours of study

Approx. 20

A series of intensive residential workshops focusing entirely on Cuban bata drumming. This workshop is suitable for existing players to further their knowledge and skills under the guidance of three highly experienced tutors.

We’ll be working on a number of Bata toques with an in-depth study into the language for each drum. The study will include learning long sequences of songs that require linking several different toques together.

“I get a great deal of enjoyment and fulfillment out of playing within a group situation as studying these rhythms alone never offers the full complement of how it should sound. I also really enjoy the added singing element of this course and would greatly appreciate more songs. Playing & singing is an underestimated skill and one that I intend to develop further. the amount we covered during the course was excellent and ran at just the right pace for me, enough to be pushed & stretched but not too much so I didn’t feel left behind.”

Collette, London

Ilu Bata is especially designed to work both as a stand alone workshop or as part of an on-going annual series. Each workshop has its own unique content and can also cater for players who have different levels of knowledge and ability.

Daytime sessions will focus on learning new material. Evening sessions will be set aside for students to play through what they’ve learnt during the day in a setting created to give participants a chance to engage in an informal environment that is closer to a Cuban Tambor.
