Workshops for Schools

Making exciting music together as a group

Samba Fusion is back for 2020.

Dates: Friday 14th to Sunday 16th February 2020
Tutor Ravin Jayasuriya

Workshop details:
The weekend will cover carnival rhythms from Brazil (Samba, Samba Reggae & Maracatu), Raz will also teach grooves that mix elements from Brazilian & Cuban rhythms creating uplifting and funky dance grooves, which are challenging and enjoyable to learn.

Raz’s clear instruction will help to develop your listening and drumming skills. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be fully aware of the interplay between the instruments and understand how the pieces are put together. We’ll also explore dynamics within the arrangements and work on playing techniques for each of the instruments.

Workshops for Schools

What we offer

Full-day & half-day workshops for EYFS, Primary & Secondary school ages. We can cater for a single class or multiple classes so whatever your requirements, we can create a workshop that suits you.

Typically, we work with up to 30 children per class with sessions lasting between 20 & 60 minutes depending on the age group. Each participant will have their own instrument and we work in sub-groups so that no one is required to play an instrument by themselves.

Time permitting, we will be able to swap instruments during the session. If required, we can start the day with a demonstration at Assembly, and/or end the day with a performance by some of the students.

Benefits

Brazilian Carnival Percussion

We use a variety of instruments played in samba music, including bass drums and hand-percussion to learn a typical carnival rhythm culminating in an arrangement that can be played by the end of the session.

We will also give some background information about Brazil, it’s culture, music & dance and explain how their carnival works.

A typical session will include the following:

  • Introduction to the instruments we’re going to use and how they should be played
  • Clapping and using the voice to learn patterns for each instrument
  • Allocating instruments in sub-groups ensuring everyone has an instrument to play
  • Gradually building up a piece of music in steps, covering elements such as intro, breaks, call & response, some phrasing for specific instruments and an ending.

West-African drumming

Our African drumming workshop is delivered all year round and links in perfectly with Black History Month, International Day, Cultural Week and Arts Week.

Each participant will have their own drum. We teach djembe rhythms in an exciting and energetic way, showing how to produce different tones, how to combine tones, create rhythms and work together as a grouo.

A typical session will include the following:

  • Introduction to the djembe drum, posture & playing techniques
  • Clapping and using the voice to learn patterns for each instrument
  • Allocating a djembe drum to each participant
  • Learning some patterns and exploring concepts such as call & response, dynamics, intros, breaks & ending

Dance & Visual Arts

Why not add an element of dance or visual arts when booking a drumming workshop?

Dancers will learn a series of movements drawing on carnival, popular and traditional dance styles. They will learn a sequence to fit with the percussion structure.

Our visual artists will help the children make carnival masks or head-dresses.
