Bata y Rumba XI 2018

“I get a great deal of enjoyment and fulfilment out of playing within a group situation as studying these rhythms alone never offers the full complement of how it should sound. I also really enjoy the added singing element of this course and would greatly appreciate more songs, especially with Rumba. Playing & singing is an underestimated skill and one that I intend to develop further.

The amount we covered during the course was excellent and ran at just the right pace for me, enough to be pushed & stretched but not too much so I didn’t feel left behind.” Collette, London

Workshop series: Level 3

Dates: 17-21Oct ’18
Course type: Residential
Hours of study: 30

This year we have the eleventh in a series of intensive residential workshops for existing players to further their knowledge and skills in Cuban Bata drumming and Rumba under the guidance of three highly experienced tutors.

These are especially designed to work both as stand alone workshops or as part of an on-going annual series. Each workshop has its own unique content and can also cater for players who have different levels of knowledge and ability.

Daytime sessions will focus on learning new material. Evening sessions will be set aside for students to play through what they’ve learnt during the day in a setting created to give participants a chance to engage in an informal environment that is closer to a Cuban Tambor or Rumba.

Bata y Rumba 2011
BATA
We’ll be working on a number of Bata toques with an in-depth study into the language for each drum. The study will include learning long sequences of songs that require linking several different toques together.

RUMBA
We’ll be working on Guaguancó, Yambú and Columbia using a mixture of conga drums and cajones (boxes). We’ll develop language for each of the drum parts including accompanying songs and quinto soloing.

Participants are invited to arrive on Friday to enjoys the days festivities. CarFest South is in aid of BBC Children in Need a incredible and worthwhile event to contribute to.

Course Content
The content is a fusion of ideas drawn from Candomblé rhythms, Samba, Maracatu, Samba Reggae & Ijexá grooves from Brazil with elements from Cuban music such as Bata rhythms, Rumba, Conga & Salsa.

The percussion grooves, played on Batucada instruments (surdos, repiniques, snares, tamborims, bells, shakers & timbas), are colourful & melodic, combining patterns & phrases creatively arranged to produce exciting dance grooves. The choreography, arranged to fit the music, draws on traditional Afro-Brazilian dance movements.

About CarFest
CarFest is an incredible annual music and motoring festival held in Cheshire (“CarFest North”) and Hampshire (“CarFest South”). It was founded by the radio presenter Chris Evans in 2012, and raises funds for Children in Need. As of July 2015 it has raised over £3½ million for the charity.

This is Global Grooves’ second year at Carfest after helping to produce the first ever CarFest Carnival in 2017. This year we want the Carnival to be even bigger and better.
